Silverdale Glen, Isle of Man
The first trick is finding this place. We drove past it twice and nearly stopped to ask directions (well, I did; men don't do those things do they?), before we realised we were actually already there.
Silverdale Glen had to be visited because it brought back such vivid memories of my early childhood. I remember spending ages choosing which wooden horse I would ride on, on the roundabout. And then always wishing I'd picked the one my big sister was riding. Dad used to pick us up to seat us on our horses, then go over to the water wheel, to operate the motor. With one pull of the lever, the water would be diverted onto the waterwheel, which drove the roundabout. And after 2 or 3 turns, we would be spinning around sedately.
It is just the same now! Except that the boating lake seems to have shrunk (surely I haven't grown that much?). There is a lovely picnic area and walks through the wood alongside the stream. Pastoral perfection.
